Alicante Hotels
Known as Valencia’s second largest town and originally called Lucentum (City of Light), Alicante lies directly at the Mediterranean Sea on the coastline between Benidorm and Elche. It has a population of more than 300,000 and is a combination of both modern and traditional society. Tourists should make it a point to drop by the long and open beach of Playa de San Juan, the city’s premier blue flag-recipient, sandy beach located some 4.5 miles from central Alicante. Aside from its golden beaches, Alicante has much history to offer with some going as far back as three centuries before the birth of Christ. One of the must-see historic structures in Alicante is the Castle of Santa Barbara, the biggest medieval fortress standing on the top of Mount Benacantil. The gothic-style Iglesia de Santa Maria, which stands over the ruins of a mosque, is also one of the city’s major attractions.
